Head of Communications, GRID-Arendal

GRID-Arendal is seeking an experienced and motivated communications and marketing  professional to serve as its Head of Communications.

Position Description
GRID-Arendal is seeking an experienced and motivated communications and marketing  professional to serve as its Head of Communications.  The Head of Communications will be responsible for executing a comprehensive communications and marketing strategy to help advance the mission of GRID-Arendal and increase its visibility among key stakeholders, including policymakers and media.  We seek a strategic thinker and a motivated professional proficient in leveraging traditional and new media communications tools, able to collaborate with an international team, and liaise with partners. 

The ideal candidate is an outstanding communicator with top-class interpersonal and managerial skills, who can apply innovative and forward thinking approaches to further developing GA’s communications strategy and play the driving role in marketing our products and services.

This is a management-level position  based in Arendal, Norway.   Reporting directly to the Managing Director, the Head of Communications will oversee a unit of six communications staff and a number of project teams.

Responsibilities and tasks:
The successful candidate will be an excellent writer and editor, with a proven track record of successfully developing and implementing communications and marketing strategies and materials, preferably in a non-profit organization. He/she will be self-directed, able to thrive under pressure, collaborate with an international team, and persuasively communicate GRID-Arendal’s key messages to an international audience.

The Head of Communications’ primary areas of responsibility will include:

  • Ensure that the organization has a strong brand strategy and reputation with clear positioning statements and communicate with its stakeholders in a clear, relevant, efficient, scientifically based and timely manner.
  • Work collaboratively with different programmes and teams to establish target audiences and communications and marketing plans for increasing GRID-Arendal’s institutional visibility and presence related to its mission and values.
  • Develop and manage an organizational media relations policy to ensure that the organization has a positive relationship with targeted parts of the media; is able to promote its key messages; has trained spokespersons prepared to speak on our behalf.
  • Ensure that the organization has an appropriate range of communications and marketing tools and materials, both in print and online that clearly articulate key messages and information about the organization in ways that develop GA as a leading provider of information about environment and development.
  • Work closely with the Managing Director in raising funds to support GRID-Arendal communications through identification of opportunities, engagement with funders and participation in proposal development and submission.

Professional qualifications:

  • Academic degree in mass communications, information sciences, marketing, public relations, or related field required. Master’s degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 to 7 years of international experience in a corporate, governmental or non-governmental organization as a communications and marketing professional.  
  • A successful track record of developing and leading communications and marketing strategies, plans, and campaigns in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment.   
  • A successful track record in media practices and procedures, including print, broadcast, online and interactive media. Strong management skills and a demonstrated ability to recruit, manage, mentor and motivate an effective team. 
  • Strategic and creative visionary thinking coupled with the drive and organizational skills necessary to ensure that strategies are implemented, objectives achieved, and success measured. Knowledge about the UN system/international organizations is an advantage.
  • Excellent English language writing, editing and verbal communication skills required. Native English speaker preferred. Knowledge of other languages is an asset.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse media, including web-based communications approaches.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication and presentation skills.
  • Principled, ethical, and professional and committed to exceptional work quality and standards.
  • High creative potential and ability to stay on the cutting edge of communication technologies.
  • Proven ability to generate funds to support activities of the Communications team.

Preferred personal qualifications:

  • Interest in the world’s environment
  • A high level of energy, initiative and enthusiasm.
  • Ability to pursue multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment and consistently meet deadlines
  • Excellent networking capabilities and diplomatic skills
  • Team orientation; ability to lead and manage teams and projects
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with/understand international cultures

Compensation:
GRID-Arendal’s salary system is linked to the Norwegian Government salary system. It is based on education and experience. Salaries are subject to Norwegian tax regulations. Insurance and personal benefits are provided in addition to salary. International staff receives additional benefits.
