I have worked in advertising and public relations throughout my career. From the early 1970's I worked as a UK government publicity and press officer for scientific and technical departments, including a period as Head of Publishing and Public Relations at the UK's Natural Resources Institute. My international experience includes film–making in Eastern Europe, the chairmanship of an international agricultural publishing initiative, membership of an European Space Agency publicity task force and a joint initiative with the European Commission to investigate the needs of European research communications.
After NRI, I joined the UK’s Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council (PPARC) as Head of Information and there I created the AlphaGalileo research news service. The service is now run by AlphaGalileo Foundation an independent not–for–profit company.
AlphaGalileo is now discussing with possible collaborators the need for similar news services in Africa and Latin–America. Our approach is that we have a resource that could, with the expertise and enthusiasm of others beyond Europe, be of benefit to other research communities.
