My names are Mary Abukutsa a full Professor of Horticulture at JKUAT in Kenya. My area of specialization is vegetable crops, plant physiology and nutrition and Agronomy. For the last 20 years i have been working in the University system, before that I worked with the Ministry of agriculture in Kenya both in the field and ministry Headquarters. I believe that Universities create a lot of knowledge that has been lying on shelves. This information needs to be translated into development. i also believe that media has an important part to play is conveying the research messages into a usable and acceptable format. the days that Universities were Ivory towers are long gone and must come down to the common persons level. I also believe that in Africa we can not meet millenium development goals especially in food and nutrition security and Health in Africa without exploiting the potential of African indigenous plants. In thsat context, I have concentrated my research activities on African Indigenous Vegetables in the last ten years while at Maseno University in Western Kenya, but wish to replicate the same in a different locality, in Central Kenya where JKUAT University is based and I moed there in January 2008. It is my wish to interact more with media to help to disseminate the findings to the end users. I am married with two teenage boys and my goal is to serve especially the youth, women and the under-privileged. I want to touch the lives of people in my interaction with Gods people and make a better place to live in.
