The effects of climate variability and change in Kenya and elsewhere in sub-Saharan Africa remains a daunting challenge. Although the government of Kenya, national and international agricultural research organizations, including the World Bank have taken initial steps to address the effects of climate change in Western Kenya , the problems remain as compelling as it 40 years ago. Food insecurity, land degradation-- as in the case of Katuk-Odeyo Gulley Jimo-East Nyando District, water crisis, health issues, cross-border conflict as in the on-going debate about Migingo Island, poverty and hunger remain unabated. From development perspectives, climate change puts significant stress to existing stress in natural resources management. Mitigation and Adaptation strategies need be informed by an enriched understanding of how potential impacts of climate change are unevenly distributed across the country and population. Addressing climate change impacts requires governance mechanism and process that provide the necessary framework for socio-economic progress. There are many sites of interventions Governance is one aspect. See my recent conference –(see this link

- Employed as a research technologist at Great Lakes University of Kenya (GLUK)'s Safe Water, Sanitation and Hygiene(SWASH+) Project, I practice freelance journalism, focusing on science, health and environment writing for Kenyan daily newspapers. I'm the immediate former editor (1999-2008) of the Association of Kenya Medical Laboratory Scientific Officers (AKMLSO), member of editorial committees of the regional FEAMLS and continental FAAMLS. Currently serving in the Publicity and Marketing sub-committee of the 29th International Federation of Biomedical Science (IFBLS) World Congress to be held in Nairobi, Kenya in June 2010. A Master of Public Health (MPH) candidate at Maseno University in Kenya, I intend to venture into academic writing and apply 'new public health' concepts to improve grassroots health and livelihoods.

It took quite the determination of the Association of Kenya Medical Laboratory Scientific Officers (AKMLSO) and solidarity of the rest of the African Biomedical Laboratory Science professional associations, coupled with high-powered publicity, marketing and lobbying blitz to convince the International Federation of Biomedical Laboratory Science (IFBLS) to award Kenya the rights to host the 29th World Congress of Biomedical Science next year.

BATTLE OVER TINY MIGINGO ISLAND
Migingo Island, the small one-acre rock on Lake Victoria that has for decades belonged to Kenya has been under siege for several months now. It is telling that Kenya's erstwhile neighbour, Uganda chose to militarise the issue, yet the display was purely meant to aggravate long-festering 'war' over control of resources on Africa's largest fresh-water lake.
