Hi,
I am currently finishing my MSc in Environmental Sciences at Wageningen University in the Netherlands. My interests are tropical deforestation, climate change and their political interactions. Furthermore I worked on Education for Sustainable Development in German and European Youth NGO´s.
Max Planck Institute Jena:
Research on Tropical Deforestation

Currently I am working with international data sets from the FAO, UNDP, WB etc. to investigate statistical relationships among deforestation and its drivers on an aggregated scale. I was surprised to find little literature on this theme. If you know any, you are very welcome to write me.
Cheers
Mika

Youth Environmental Network

Hey,

besides writing about my research interests I think it is worth reporting about a youth initiative, we started 2 years ago. It is an Environmental Youth Platform called www.eurotope.net with interviews from volunteers all over Europe. If you know anyone who is interested in writing an article for us, I would appreciate it.

Cheers.

Mika

Thanks to Mikes great idea of creating own networks we are able to put our old webpage eurotope.net to http://eurotope.ning.com/ ...and I think, this allows a much better communication among young people active for the environment. Thanks Mike!

Hello Mika,
Good to know that you worked in PNG and in Suva. I am living in Suva also working for SPC Plant Protection Service. Sairusi Bulai (email: SairusiB@spc.int) is currently Forestry Advisior so contact him if you need to do so directly. My work is centred around biosecurity issues, invasive species prevention and management. Introduced species are seen as the second most important threat to the conservation of biodiversity in the tiny islands of the Pacific, second only to habitat destruction. In the Pacific where the environment and people's livelihoods are intertwined, it is difficult to separate the impacts of one sector on another. We are therefore looking at preventing or managing those threats where we can.
SPC is also involved in assisting rural farmers in the Pacific to meet their food security needs as well as ways of increasing their incomes in a sustaibble way in light of common threats such as globalisation/marginalisation, rising sea levels, increasing population growths and urban poverty.

Mikan, mi hamamas tru long yu wantok.

Best regards,

Hey Sven,
good to hear from you. I am currently assistant board officer to YEE and we managed to conduct a few youth exchanges in the last years. How about writing a best-practice book about your experience in the youth NGO sector? I am sure, you have lots to tell.

Mika ... have fun at one of the workshops or co-organise one with YEE: Youth Environment Europe ... the umbrella organisation for all Youth Environmental Movements all over Europe.
