CRESCENT UNIVERSITY HOLDS 6TH CONVOCATION LECTURE,
...Advocates Support for Private Universities Once Again
By Idris Katib
Crescent University, Abeokuta held its sixth convocation lecture today with the topic title " Youths, Education and Nation-building: Challenges, Prospects and Realities in Nigeria", advocating government support for private universities.
The University was founded by the former world court judge, Prince Bola Ajibola in 2005 with the vision of learning and character.
Speaking on the 6th Convocation Lecture topic, the Vice Chancellor of Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State, Prof Saburi Adesanya noted that currently, only private universities charged some form of reasonable fees while state and federal governments had been shying away owing to politics.
On the fact that funding ' has been the panacea of all universities worldwide,' Prof. Adesanya posited that while governments at federal and state levels have been arguing that government alone cannot fund education, several union and civil rights organisations are averse to the argument.
He however lamented that " it is sad to note that parents are in the forefront of mis-educating the youth", adding that parents lied about the age of their children for the children to start school early or because of some peculiarly gains.
Prof. Adesanya stressed that attempts to separate secondary schools and universities from social ills have failed since the youth who is a learner absorbs all that he sees around him with ease including the bad vices.
On cultural values of the youths, Adesanya posited that although adulthood in Nigeria was expected to be 18 years , " we have continued to regard persons up to 40 years as youth thereby distorting our expectations of such people", noting that such attributes have partly arisen from the age distortions in schooling years which now extended to graduation".
Prof Adesanya said it was important that Nigeria strengthen its primary and secondary education with technology, standard facilities , training and retraining of teachers in new modern facilities for the next three decades rather than change policies anyhow.
Quoting from Quran 13 verse 11, Prof. Adesanya said God would not change the condition of a people until they changed themselves.
