The Earth, our lovely Mother

The Earth is just like our own mother. She raised me up, feeding me and telling me what should I do. Some times is not eassy to conduct what our mother asked us to do or not do? Now she is getting old. Her skin is not smooth anymore, her beauty was fading away but she stills the wise and lovely mother. I give my tribute and respect to her has done to me and to all brother and sister. Let us give our love to mother of earth. Happy Earth Day, April, 22-2008 Maria

whaling is the Lamaleran way of life

It was a nice day. I saw the sky so clear and the blue water of Sawu Sea. I drink a cup of the at that nice morning, suddenly, people screaming "baleo...baleo..." this word indicating whales appears in their area during Indo-Pacific migration. It was 2nd of May. Only in a few minutes, almost all fishermen run to the beach, reaching their boat, a traditional boat to

Dear Maria,
Good to hear from you. let me know when you finish reading Typhoon( perempuan terluka). hope you enjoy it.

As to the topic of domestic helpers, I do have a view - the issue of equality, the relationship between employers and the employee, the exploitation by the employer ie long hrs and perhaps 7 days a week throughout the yr, in the case of some, the domestic helper's separation from their family etc. This is not acceptable and totally unfair.

Living in the west, where there isn't a culture of widespread domestic help affects our attitude and perceptions to this topic . Generally in the UK we only employ the odd cleaner, to tidy the house for a few hrs. The notion of having afulltime cleaner/maid as is the case in many developing countries, at my beck and call would be alien to me. I would feel extremely guilty.

In my novels I often ie in The Holy Woman,( perempuan Suci) set in Pakistan and other countries I explore this relationship between masters and servants. My empathy is always with the servants and in the way they are treated by the people they are employed by. In my third novel that I am working on I have 2 women servants living in wealthy households of landowning families - one is a rebel, rebelling against the ill treatment and her role as a servant. The other is loyal, devoted to the house she has given her live to.

I guess the point I am making in my literature is that domestic helpers deserve respect and like any other human being their human dignity is important to them too.

I hope this helps, keep in touch. here busy with editing the novel.
have a good weekend, and salam to yr husband.

Dear Maria,

Thanks a lot for your recommendation for me to be involved in the Antara-organized workshops that will be held in Makassar, Kendari, Jayapura and Surabaya in October. Basically, I am interested to be involved in those cities. But we have to check our respective schedule and syllabus first. Who knows there are things that I have to do in October. I really appreciate this offer.

Hi Maria,
I could have easily mistaken you as a Filipino (though when I'm in Indonesia, I'm also mistaken for a local).

Thanks for your post on my wall. Manila has been struggling to be warm as sometimes the monsoon rains would come.

I'm interested in what you do. Are your pieces available in the web?

Regards,
Lala
