Nutrition studies in the Lancet

Two studies on nutrition from the International Food Policy Research Institute have been published recently in the Lancet, a leading medical journal. The first study finds that feeding very young children a high-energy, high-protein supplement leads to increased economic productivity in adulthood, especially for men. Boys who received the supplement in the first two years of life earned on average 46 percent higher wages as adults. This study is the first to present direct evidence of the effec… Continue

New study -- reducing anemia in developing countries

Iron deficiency is the single biggest nutritional threat in developing countries. A recent study by the International Food Policy Research Institute and Cornell University found that a nutritional supplement known as Sprinkles reduces anemia in young children by more than half. Sprinkles can be easily and inexpensively incorporated into existing feeding programs.

You can find a press release, summary of the study, fact sheets,

Essays on media and development

Everyone in this network understands that journalists play a crucial role in development. We have all seen amazing coverage...and coverage that was not so amazing. We asked a U.S. journalist who has lived and traveled extensively in developing countries to share his perceptions of the strengths and weaknesses of media coverage of development issues and to offer recommendat

You are right, we had a chat in Dhaka. Moreover, I had visited IFPRI during my stay in Washington on a visit to the programmes on sustainable development week organised by the World Bank. Getting IFPRI mails.
Thanks and regards

Thanks Michael for inviting to become your friend. Of course we became friends when you came and met us at Grand Regency in Nairobi in 2005. Just want to let yopu know that our media association in Kenya, MESHA (www.meshanet.org) is growing stronger and stronger despite us having never gotten any donor funds to help run any activity. We now have our website where we do post science stories. I am looking for ways of ensuring the site becomes more useful with time. Are you still pursuing the training workshop in Nairobi on biotechnology? Please let me know.

Hi Michael,
Sorry for my delayed reply.
Now I remember where and when we met. If I remember it right, it was an All Saints' Day then.
It was also unfortunate that I failed to attend the Melbourne conference. But I'm very thankful that Mike created this social network so all of us now have a chance to meet and have an exchange of information, ideas etc.
Yes, I will surely appreciate if you could send me materials from your org. Thanks in advance. And will send you the articles from your materials.
And I will surely inform you if I pass by your side of the planet. Thanks.

Yes, I remember you. We met at the CGIAR conference in 2001. You participated in a lunch at Shangri La. It's good to hear from you after all that time. Were you at this science conference in Australia? I couldn't make it unfortunately.

Please let me know if you need information on anything. Also, please send any articles you've written based on our material (it's hard to know from here when something gets published in the Philippines...)

If you plan a visit to Washington, let me know.

Hi Michael,
I think we've met in a conference here in Manila a few years ago. Am I correct? And since then I've been receiving materials from IFRI through you. Please don't hesitate to send me new materials if you have one. I publish them in our paper's science page which I edit or as background materials in our stories. Best regards. Let's keep in touch.
